Whether you’re a GP, social worker or volunteer befriender, you can learn through free virtual training or e-learning courses.
Free Virtual Training Courses
Learn from a qualified trainer in an interactive session and within your team or as a group. These training courses are being delivered virtually online until face-to-face training can be resumed. Training sessions could be fitted into a team meeting or run as a stand-alone course.
1. Helping People Become Physically Active
1 hour | Non-Clinical
We can all play a part in enabling others to be more active. Whether that’s through signposting, discussing benefits or simply encouragement. In this interactive online session, we’ll cover the importance and benefits of being active, national guidance and tips, free national resources, local opportunities and positive conversation skills. Participants will receive a free digital resource pack following the session.
This course is for people working in non-clinical roles such as social prescribers, care navigators, befrienders and volunteers.
2. PHE Physical Activity in Clinical Care
1 hour | Clinical
As a healthcare professional, you play a unique role in addressing inactivity, with one in four people stating that they would be more active if they were advised by a GP or nurse. Delivered by a local Public Health England (PHE) Physical Activity Champion, this short course covers the evidence for physical activity and long-term conditions, current Chief Medical Officer’s guidelines, and how to provide brief advice during consultations. A Leap team member will join this session to give an overview of local activity opportunities.

3. Making Every Contact Count and Motivational Interviewing Training (variable, free)
The aim of Making Every Contact Count and Motivational Interviewing training is to provide participants with the consultation skills and confidence to have supportive and motivational conversations with patients that enable behaviour change and boost their self-efficacy. PHE and Sport England’s Physical Activity and Health course is 11-module training, covering older adults, children and young people, pregnancy and postnatal, in addition to specific long-term health conditions and a ‘how to’ motivational Interviewing video.
