Get Active

Leisure activities for adults with learning disabilities

Sport and physical activity play a powerful role in the lives of people with disabilities. With Stoke Mandeville Stadium in Buckinghamshire being the birthplace of the Paralympics, we have an unprecedented opportunity to inspire people of all ages with disabilities to take part in sport and physical activity, whether as a participant or as sports coaches and activity leaders.

The Get Active programme supports adults with learning disabilities to be more active. Run in partnership with local leisure providers, it focuses on building the physical skills of individuals and boosting their confidence in using local community sports provision.

To date more than 250 adults with learning disabilities have accessed sport and physical activity sessions linked to the project. Among them is Adrian, who enjoys football, two different multi sports sessions and rounders each week. For him it’s an opportunity to meet other people who share his love of sport.

For many carers and professionals it offers all the benefits, both socially and physically, of being more active.
