Information

Free teacher support to help deliver an active start in life for pupils.

During a consultation conducted in 2014 in partnership with Buckinghamshire County Council, it was identified that many children entering Key Stage 2 and beyond lack some of the skills to enable them to fully participate in sporting activities.

Expecting children to play formalised sports or activities such as Football, Netball, Rounders, Cricket, Athletics or Dance, without having a solid grasp of skills like throwing, catching, hand-eye co-ordination and team work can be likened to them trying to learn to read and write without a solid grasp of the alphabet. Physical Literacy is a term used to describe these fundamental movement skills which provide children with the necessary movement foundations for lifelong participation in physical activity; it is not a programme, but the recommended outcome of a structured PE lesson.

The Bucks Physical Literacy project commissioned by Bucks County Council has been developed as an additional support package for Key Stage 1 Primary School Teachers and includes 1 day of free teacher training, a resource pack of 30 lesson plans and 2 on site visits from a specialist mentor.

Written by a specialist in early years and primary physical development, all sessions are constructed to align with the aims of the new National Curriculum for PE and cover the main subject content that should be taught in Key Stage 1. The resource along with the training is designed to give teachers the necessary skills to deliver age and stage appropriate opportunities that will allow you as a school to maximise the potential to develop the physical literacy of all pupils through PE and school sport, helping to achieve outstanding PE lessons.

The package has an associated cost of £750 but in a special introductory offer your school can access this resource for free.
